Many people have misconceptions about mastitis, often assuming that any inflammation in the breast requires antibiotics. The reality is more nuanced, as mastitis exists on a spectrum with various interventions such as Therapeutic Ultrasound available depending on the severity and specific circumstances.

The Misconceptions

In the past, many have believed that inflammation in the breast always indicates bacterial mastitis, necessitating a course of antibiotics. However, we now understand that mastitis can manifest in different forms, ranging from simple inflammation to bacterial infection. It's important to recognise this spectrum to choose the most appropriate and effective treatment.

My Personal Experience

Having breastfed both my daughter and now my son, I've occasionally experienced inflammation in my breast tissue. Fortunately, by following a few key steps and utilising Therapeutic Ultrasound, I've managed to prevent this from escalating to the point of needing antibiotics. I hope that by sharing these guidelines, I can help you avoid the escalation of inflammation as well.

Understanding the Mastitis Spectrum

The spectrum ranges from simple hyperlactation to bacterial mastitis and abscess formation. Here’s a quick look at the different stages:

Action List: What You Can Do

To help prevent inflammation from escalating, here are some actionable steps you can take:

  1. Feed on demand: Avoid aiming to "empty" your breasts completely. Feeding on demand helps regulate milk production naturally.

  2. Wear a proper bra: Ensure your bra fits correctly to avoid unnecessary pressure and discomfort.

  3. Utilize therapeutic ultrasound: We have a therapeutic ultrasound available at the clinic, which can be incredibly helpful in reducing inflammation.

  4. Take anti-inflammatories if needed: Consult with your healthcare provider about the appropriate use of anti-inflammatory medications.

  5. Consider probiotics: Certain strains of probiotics can help reduce the risk of mastitis. We offer these at the clinic. There are particular strains that have been recommended to reduce inflammation as well!

Things to Avoid

  1. Minimize pump usage: This helps maintain the natural bacterial exchange between mother and infant.

  2. Avoid nipple shields: Unless absolutely necessary, as they can sometimes contribute to issues.

  3. Avoid deep massage and vibration: This can increase inflammation rather than reduce it.

  4. Reserve antibiotics for bacterial mastitis: Only use antibiotics when a bacterial infection is confirmed.
